Apple Oat Bran Muffins

I’ve fallen into a fairly new morning rhythm of rising a bit earlier to have some quiet time in the kitchen before the kids wake up.  In the past I’d been more sporadic about waking up, sometimes letting myself sleep until the last possible moment and then quickly scrambling to get ready in a mad rush.  (Cereal comes in handy on those days.)  I’ve found, however, that I’m much calmer and gentler in dealing with the children if I’ve had an hour or so to myself.  Being deliberate with preparing breakfast somehow helps me to prepare for the rest of the day and it’s especially comforting on chilly mornings to enjoy something warm from the oven.

Stuffed Mini Pumpkins

Our local raspberry farm was running a special on mini pumpkins this year- an entire bucket (nearly 40!) pumpkins for eight dollars.  I had just volunteered to supply my daughter’s class with mini pumpkins for their decorating activity at this year’s harvest party, so you can imagine how happy I was.  Inexpensive AND I was able to support a local farm- perfect.

Ginger Pear Tea

Ginger Pear Tea

Last week my daughter’s brownies troop had an apple orchard outing on the calendar.  Nevermind that it was 38 degrees and raining, they were determined to carry on.  “Always be prepared” is one of their mottos.  With our rain boots, coats, hats, mittens, and umbrellas, we were good to go.  We toured the cider mill, drank cider and donuts, and then it was time to pick apples in the biting wind and rain.  Most of girls toughed it out cheerfully, happy with their rainy day adventures.  Not my daughter though.  She made sure to let me know about how freezing she was, and how she just wanted to go home and take a bath.  Later that evening we discovered that she had a fever of 102.  Poor girl.
