Chai Spice Scones with Dark Chocolate

Just a quick post for today; I had a request for these chai spice scones that I posted to instagram a while ago and thought I would post the recipe here in case anyone else was interested.  These are based on my orange cinnamon scones with dark chocolate in which I swapped out the orange juice and for chai tea concentrate (I like this one), omitted the zest, and added a touch of cardamom.  Simple changes, but the flavor profile is altered completely.  These are exactly how I prefer my scones-  whole grain, yet soft and tender, with crisp edges, crackly tops, and just subtly sweet.  Although coffee is an obvious choice to pair with scones, I especially enjoy these alongside a warm mug of almond milk.

Chai Spice Scones with Dark Chocolate
 
Ingredients
  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
  • ¼ cup coconut sugar
  • 2½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cardamom
  • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
  • 2 ounces chopped dark chocolate, about ⅓ cup
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons chai tea concentrate
  • ¼ cup + 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1 egg yolk plus 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 400. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flours, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Cut butter into small cubes and scatter over the dry ingredients. Use a pastry blender to cut the butter cubes into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the chocolate.
  3. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the egg, chai tea concentrate, and cream. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon until just combined.
  4. Transfer dough to a well-floured surface and form two circles ¾" thick. Use a floured knife to cut each circle into 6 wedges. Transfer scones to the baking sheet, leaving at least 1" between each.
  5. Whisk together the egg yolk and water. Use a pastry brush to brush scones with the egg wash. Bake 13-16 minutes, until golden brown around the edges.

    Scones are such a comfort food for me Emily, so anytime I see or hear of a scone, I want to jump right in and make up a batch. They are so good fresh from the oven. I’ve never tried Chai Spice Scones but can imagine how amazing they with those dark chocolate chunks. Divine! I need to give this a go! xo

    Whenever I think of scones I think of my Granny, she always used to make them when I was growing up. I remember hers to be dry and crumbly, but then when heated, cut, and spread with butter, the best treat with a cup of tea. Wow, I just realized how I’ve missed her scones! Yours look delicious too!

    Oh, I love scones so much! This recipe is music to my ears. The chai + dark chocolate combo is fantastic!!     I love my scones like this too. Though I am not a big fan of chai spice flavors, I am loving the idea of using a combination of whole wheat and pastry flours.

    Dark chocolate in scones isn’t something I have tried before, but can’t believe I have been missing out – the thought of gooey chocolate in a crispy edged, buttery scone is heavenly. Spices are perfect for cooler days too – definitely saving for when winter hits Melbourne!

    Hi Emily, I just stumbled on your lovely lovely blog. LOVE your pictures!!! Wish I could take food pics like you!! Already pinned a couple of your recipes, hope to have the time to try them out soon. These scones sound AMAZING! I just have a question, I don’t think I can find ‘chai tea concentrate’ here in Italy. The supermarkets here are not really well-stocked with international stuff. Do you think I could just make some (really strong) chai tea and use that instead? Even though I saw that there’s not really any liquid in this recipe… 🙁 maybe in place of some of the butter??

Thanks so much for your sweet compliment. 🙂 Yes, I think you can substitute some very concentrated chai tea for the concentrate, although I’m not sure how many tea bags per cup of water. The dona chai concentrate is liquid so you shouldn’t have to make any other adjustments. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for stopping by and pinning!
